When you are trying to establish a brand, even the smallest details matter. One of those things is your website favicon. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a favicon for your WordPress website.
What is a Favicon?
A Favicon, short for favorite icon is a tiny image that is associated with your website. You can usually see it in the tab bar of your web browser. A favicon helps identify your website and is part of your branding (a tiny one, but still significant in my opinion).Due to the various screen sizes and devices nowadays, a favicon image should be ideally sized 512 x 512 px.
How to create a Favicon for your (WordPress) website?
Use your logo as a favicon
Your business logo is an excellent candidate for a favicon. I am also using Lipstick and Pixels' logo as a favicon for my own page. Most of the themes today won't actually require you to have a ready .ico icon. Instead, you can just upload a simple .PNG image.If your logo contains a lot of details it might not be the best choice for a favicon.
Tip Do the following: shrink your logo to 32 px and see how it looks. Does it still look like a logo? Can you read the text?
For best practices, just use your watermark or an icon or element that represents your brand. It could be the initial letter of your business, a heart, a wave or whatever fits your existing branding. You want people to know immediately that they are on your website.
Create a favicon from scratch
Do you want to create a custom favicon from scratch? No problem! The easiest way to create a favicon is using Canva. It's free and it's fast!Let's do it 💪🏻
1.Open Canva
Go to www.canva.com and log into your Canva account, or alternatively sign up for one ( it's free).
2.Create a file sized 512 x 512 px and save it as My Favicon or something similar that makes sense to you.
3.Create a simple favicon with your brand colors
You can either upload your own logo files or create a simple favicon using Canva's free elements library and/or add some text to it.
4.Download the file and save it to your computer
Once you are happy with the final results, simply download the file as an.PNG and save it to your computer.
How to upload your favicon to WordPress?
Uploading your favicon to WordPress is very easy.Go to Appearance-> Customize -> Site Identity. Then, upload your file and click Save.
Reload your website and you will be able to see your brand new favicon 💖
